How to properly care for cast iron cookware: rules for cleaning and storage
Until recently, cast iron cookware was considered a relic of the past. However, due to its durability and excellent heat retention, many people choose to use this material for cooking. SSPDaily has told you how to properly care for cast iron cookware.
Treatment of cast iron cookware
As a result of the treatment, a protective layer is formed on the surface of the pan, which prevents rusting and improves non-stick properties.
To treat cast iron cookware, follow these steps:
- Preheat the oven to 190 °C.
- Wash the cookware with warm water and mild soap, removing all food residues.
- Dry the pan thoroughly with a clean towel.
- Spread a thin layer of vegetable oil or melted fat over the entire surface, inside and out.
- Turn the pan over on the middle shelf of the oven and place a baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom shelf to catch any drips.
- Bake for an hour, then turn off the appliance and let it cool completely before removing the pan.
Cleaning cast iron cookware
Cleaning cast iron cookware is a delicate process that requires special attention. Unlike other pans, you should not use harsh detergents or abrasive scourers as they can damage the surface.
Proper cleaning:
- After using the pan, allow it to cool to room temperature.
- Use a stiff-bristled brush or a non-abrasive sponge to remove any food residue.
- If stubborn dirt remains, add a little salt to the pan and scrub gently.
- Rinse the pan under warm water and dry it with a clean towel.
- Place the pan on the stove for a minute or two to make sure it is completely dry.
- Apply a thin layer of oil or melted fat to the surface to maintain the material's properties.
Remember that cast iron cookware should not be soaked in water or left wet as this can lead to rust.
Storage of cast iron cookware
- Before storing the cookware, make sure it is completely dry to prevent rust.
- Place a paper towel or clean cloth inside the cookware to absorb moisture and prevent odors.
- Store the pan in a cool, dry place to avoid moisture.
- If you stack several items, place a paper towel between them to prevent scratches.
