Kitchen Hacks: Cracking Open Walnuts Three Ways
Walnuts are one of the most easily available nuts in our country. They are delicious and highly nutritious. These nuts promote both brain and heart health effectively.
Originating from Central Asia, walnuts were brought to India by nomadic tribes. Today, they have become essential in Indian cuisine, especially in desserts, trail mixes, and granola bars. They also serve as excellent salad ingredients. Adding such a versatile and nutritious nut to your diet is undoubtedly a good idea. If you don’t have a nut-cracker, here are some simple hacks to shell walnuts.
Hacks: How to Crack Open a Walnut
The Door Hinge Method
This adventurous yet reliable method is easy to try. First, find a door with a sturdy hinge support. Place the walnut between the open door, hinge, and the door frame. Next, slowly close the door, allowing the hinge to press tightly against the nut. Listen for the cracking sound. Once you hear it, open the door to retrieve the walnut and use your hands to separate the shell from the nut.
Hammer Blow
Start by soaking the walnuts in hot water for a few hours. This will help soften the hard outer shell. Then, place the walnut on a flat surface with the pointy end facing upward. Carefully strike the walnut with a hammer, and the shell should crack along its axis. Pull the shell apart but be cautious not to injure yourself in the process.
Using Bare Hands
If a door or hammer isn’t available, you can use your hands. Hold two walnuts parallel to each other in your hand. Clasp them tightly, ensuring they press against one another. By applying this force, you should be able to break one of the walnuts open.
