Mohamed Salah's Future with Liverpool: Uncertainty Despite Stellar Performance
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah recently declared that this season might be his final one with the Reds, igniting numerous speculations about his future. Salah, who shined in Liverpool’s emphatic 3-0 win against Manchester United by scoring and providing two assists, shared that a less pressured mentality has positively influenced his gameplay this season.
The 32-year-old forward told Sky Sports, "I had a good summer and stayed positive as it's my last year at the club. I just want to enjoy football and see what happens next year." Despite his excellent start this season, evidenced by three goals and three assists in Liverpool’s first three matches, no contract extension talks have been initiated by the club so far.
Amid increasing interest from elsewhere, including a rejected big-money offer from Saudi Arabia last year, Salah’s current contract is set to terminate at the end of the 2024/25 season. However, Salah emphasized, "No one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I'm just like, 'OK, I'm playing my last season and see what happens at the end’."
Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, addressed the speculation saying, "It’s a lot of 'if'. Right now, he is one of ours, and I’m thrilled with his performance today. I don't talk about players' contracts, but I can speak volumes about how Mo played."
The situation with Salah is particularly crucial for Liverpool as he is only 14 goals short of surpassing Billy Liddell to become Liverpool’s fourth all-time top scorer. Despite this, the club appears to be behind schedule regarding contractual decisions. Their newly appointed sporting director, Richard Hughes, and the departure of Jurgen Klopp have shifted the focus towards other pressing issues, possibly delaying the discussions about extending Salah and other significant player contracts.
Sky Sports reports that there’s still an opportunity to negotiate, with Salah poised on playing at the top level for as long as his physical condition permits, similar to Cristiano Ronaldo. Although the specter of a transfer, potentially to Saudi Arabia, looms in the background, Salah reportedly has no immediate appetite for that move.
As veteran Liverpool player Jamie Carragher pointed out, Salah might be preserving himself for top-flight football well into his late thirties, thus further negating worries of a foreseeable sharp decline in his on-field performance.
Conclusively, while Liverpool has prospered at the start of the season amidst the swirling rumors about Salah’s departure, a pressing need remains for open discussions to determine the future of their prized forward.
