Stephen Curry Agrees to One-Year Extension with Golden State Warriors
Stephen Curry has extended his contract with the Golden State Warriors for an additional year, a decision that was officially announced on Thursday. According to the NBA’s official website, this extension is valued at a whopping $62.6 million, binding him to the team through the 2026-27 season. Detailed reports state that Curry is now guaranteed about $178 million over the next three seasons, bringing his career earnings from basketball contracts to approximately $532 million. This remarkable figure places him as the second-highest earner in NBA history, right after LeBron James who has accumulated $580 million.
Curry's contributions to the sport are undeniably historic. Currently 36 years old, he has played all of his 15 NBA seasons with the Warriors. Throughout his tenure, he has continually set records and holds the title for the most three-pointers made in NBA history. His accolades include back-to-back MVP Awards in 2015 and 2016, the latter of which he won with a unanimous vote—a first in the league's history. He has led the Warriors to four NBA titles, most recently garnering the Finals MVP award in 2022.
Last season, however, ended in disappointment for the Warriors as the team missed out on the playoffs following their exit in the Play-In tournament. Despite this setback, Curry enjoyed personal success, averaging 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 45% overall and 40.8% on three-pointers. He also led the NBA in clutch scoring and was honored with the 2023-24 KiA NBA Clutch Player of the Year award for his exceptional performance in critical moments.
Stylistically, the Warriors are preparing for a new chapter. During the summer, Klay Thompson, Curry’s long-time "Splash Brother" teammate, moved to the Dallas Mavericks, signaling a shift in the team’s dynamics. Nonetheless, Draymond Green remains on the roster along with emerging players Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis, around whom the Warriors plan to build.
Off the court, Curry played a pivotal role in the US team’s gold medal win in men's basketball at the 2024 Paris Olympics. His remarkable performance, notably during a decisive fourth quarter against France, was instrumental in securing the victory.
Curry’s legacy as an all-time great in basketball continues to grow, both within the NBA and on the global stage. As the Warriors look forward to a transformative season, Curry's influence and leadership will undoubtedly be central to their plans for future success.
