Australian Tom Craig Banned for 12 Months Following Cocaine Arrest at Paris Olympics
Australian hockey player Tom Craig has been issued a 12-month suspension by Hockey Australia after attempting to purchase cocaine during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite being arrested, he was released without charge but received a criminal warning from French authorities following his night in custody. This is prepared by SSP.
Hockey Australia clarified that Craig must serve six months of the suspension immediately, while the remaining six months are suspended, dependent on his adherence to conduct and behavioral standards. Craig will be eligible for inclusion in the 2025 national men’s squad, which is to be announced later this year.
The suspension became effective on September 9. Hockey Australia emphasized that Craig continues to have access to athlete support services, highlighting the organization’s commitment to his well-being. As part of his sanctions, Craig is also required to complete various mandatory training and education programs.
Tom Craig openly admitted to his "terrible mistake" and issued an apology to his family, friends, teammates, and the broader Australian Olympic team following his release. Despite this incident, Australia’s chef de mission, Anna Meares, noted that Craig is "a good person who made a bad decision."
Craig has made significant contributions to his team with over 100 appearances and helped secure a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, even though the Australian men's team placed sixth in Paris.
