Clark Breaks WNBA Rookie Three-Point Record
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has made remarkable strides in her inaugural WNBA season, breaking another record against the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night, BBC reported. The 22-year-old's performance in the 84-80 victory included scoring 19 points and sinking her 86th three-pointer, surpassing the previous rookie record of 85 three-pointers set by Atlanta Dream's Rhyne Howard in 2022. Notably, Howard required a full 34-game season to set her record, while Clark achieved hers in just 31 games. Currently leading the WNBA in three-pointers with a total reaching 88, Clark's exceptional first season has seen her set several other records, including a single-season rookie record of 224 assists.
Drafted first overall by the Fever in 2024 after a record-breaking college stint at the University of Iowa, Clark notably surpassed Pete Maravich's 54-year-old record in 2023 to become the all-time leading scorer in both men's and women's college basketball with 3,951 points. During her college career, she averaged 28.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists and played a key role in enhancing the popularity of women's basketball. Highlighting her significant impact, nearly 19 million viewers watched the Iowa Hawkeyes' NCAA final in 2023.
Moreover, Clark's game against the Sun saw her register five rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block, despite committing seven turnovers. Impressively, she also holds records such as the WNBA single-game assists with 19, rookie assists, rookie All-Star Game assists, and single-game three-pointers. Clark's unique achievements include being the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double and amass career totals of 400 points, 100 rebounds, and 150 assists.
Continuing to etch her name into the WNBA annals, Clark on Wednesday became the quickest to reach 500 career points and 250 assists. With nine games left in the season, she is in pursuit of additional records like total points (744, set by Seimone Augustus in 2006) and point-assist double-doubles (11, established by Courtney Vandersloot in 2017). Thus, she not only impressed fans with her scoring but also demonstrated her prowess in ball distribution.
