Dak Prescott Becomes NFL’s Highest-Paid Player with New Contract Extension
The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have finalized a four-year, $240 million contract extension, rendering Prescott, at 31, the highest-paid player, according to the NFL. This substantial deal boasts $231 million in guaranteed money and an $80 million signing bonus, averaging $60 million annually. It recently eclipses the $55 million average annual salaries secured by Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence.
This announcement, which keeps Prescott in Dallas till the end of the 2028 season, came just hours before the Cowboys' 33-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns to open the season. Following the win, Prescott, who threw for 179 yards and a touchdown, expressed hope that discussions around his contract would cease, allowing the focus to shift to the team's on-field pursuits.
Prescott's previous season was commendable, as he led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes, contributed 410 completions, and almost clinched the league's MVP title. Over his eight-year career with the Cowboys, he has led the team to the playoffs five times, including consecutive appearances in the past three seasons. However, though the Cowboys secured three 12-win regular seasons under his leadership, they have struggled in the playoffs, winning just two of seven post-season matches and failing to go beyond the divisional round.
The contract also brings clarity following prolonged uncertainties surrounding deals for Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who recently secured his own four-year, $136 million contract. As the Cowboys strive to end their nearly 30-year Super Bowl drought, they are looking to Prescott to steer them towards that elusive championship.
