Emilio Gay Set to Join Durham from Northamptonshire
Emilio Gay, currently serving as an opener at Northants, will be joining County Championship Division One side Durham on a three-year deal starting from the 2025 season, The Telegraph reported.
The 24-year-old has been a key figure at Northants, having come through their academy and making his senior debut in 2019 as a teenager. Throughout his career, he has gathered over 2,700 first-class runs and achieved six centuries, his best score being 261 against Middlesex in April.
Reflecting on his move to Durham, Gay mentioned, "I have heard great things about the club both on and off the field and I am very much looking forward to being part of a new environment next season." Gay's performance this summer has been outstanding, making him the fourth-leading run-scorer in the County Championship with 860 runs at an average of 61.42. The switch to Chester-le-Street will be significant for him as he aims for international recognition with hopes of playing for England. "Durham has a huge reputation of their players representing the national team and with my aspirations to play for England, I hope this opportunity will enable me to fulfill my international aspirations," Gay said, hopeful of his new journey.
Further details confirmed Gay’s departure from Northants, having turned down a new contract at the County Ground. Having been part of the Northants setup for nine years, Gay will join Durham, available for all formats. He has been prolific in the County Championship this year and has accumulated almost 1,000 runs in white-ball cricket. Besides his accolades in first-class cricket, including six hundred and 13 fifties, Gay also performed impressively in List A cricket, starring with 332 runs in eight games in 2022 and his maiden 50-over century against Lancashire at Blackpool. Additionally, he has appeared in 13 T20 games for the Steelbacks, marking his first short-format half-century against Durham at Seat Unique Riverside last summer.
The formal announcement read, "Durham Cricket is delighted to announce that Emilio Gay will join the club on a three-year deal ahead of the 2025 season. A tall left-handed top-order batter, Gay will bring vast potential and experience to our team."
