Gallagher Joins Atletico Madrid for £33m
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has agreed to transfer to Atletico Madrid for £33m, BeSoccer reports. Despite initial concerns about his interest, the 24-year-old confirmed to Atletico officials on Sunday night that he is ready for the move. This decision will conclude his 18-year tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Gallagher, who has less than a year left on his Chelsea contract and participated in five matches at Euro 2024, found the Blues' two-year extension offer unfavorable due to its duration and the limited role it entailed. Under new manager Enzo Maresca, known for his possession-based strategy, Gallagher was not expected to be a regular starter.
Chelsea favored a sale to a foreign club over an English rival, enabling Atletico to secure the midfielder at a lower cost. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid, after receiving confirmation from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, had also planned to sign Javi Guerra from Valencia for €25m as a backup.
Ali Barat of 'Epic Sports' and Paul Nicholls of 'Elite Management Agency' negotiated Gallagher's deal. Nicholls, notable for his role with Chelsea players and David Beckham's academy, was instrumental in concluding the transfer. Gallagher is now set to undergo a medical and finalize his contract with Atletico Madrid.
This transfer becomes Atletico's third major summer signing, following deals for Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad for €34.5m and Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal for €32m, addressing multiple team lines.
Earlier SSP reported that Gross completed a move to Boyhood Club Dortmund.
