Olympic swimmer Tamara Potocká collapses poolside after her 200m medley heat
There was notable drama at the Olympic swimming event at La Defense Arena as Slovakian swimmer Tamara Potocká experienced a collapse following her participation in the women’s 200m individual medley. Potocká, aged 21, finished seventh in her race before climbing out of the water and subsequently collapsing poolside, The Guardian reported. Immediate medical attention was provided, including the administration of an oxygen mask. The swimming heats were delayed by roughly 10 minutes as medical staff attended to her, eventually moving Potocká onto a stretcher and carrying her away in a prone position.
Medical Response and Condition
A Slovakian official stated Potocká did not have her inhaler available in the arena, crucial as she is asthmatic. Ivana Lange, Slovakia’s team leader, emphasized that a combination of nervous and physical tension, coupled with the absence of her inhaler, triggered the asthma attack causing her collapse. Lange further reported that Potocká received oxygen and necessary medication and that her condition was being closely monitored. Potocká was taken to the hospital for further medical supervision. Later updates confirmed she was conscious and able to communicate with doctors.
Competition Outcomes
Despite the medical incident, venue officials later confirmed Potocká was stable and continuing to receive medical care. However, having finished 23rd overall, Potocká did not advance to the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh clocked the quickest qualifying time in the individual medley.
Spectators’ Support
There was a resounding cheer of support from the crowd as Potocká was stretchered away, highlighting the Olympic spirit of solidarity and encouragement amongst competitors.
