Romaine Mundle Helps Sunderland Clinch Championship Win Over Burnley
Sunderland achieved a narrow but historic victory over Burnley, making it three wins out of three in the Championship, for the first time in 99 years. Under new French head coach Regis Le Bris, Romane Mundle scored the only goal in the first half, ensuring Sunderland's perfect start to the season, a feat last achieved in 1925-26. Scott Parker’s undefeated run with Burnley ended as the recently relegated team couldn't handle Sunderland's fluid and high pressing game. This is prepared by SSP.
Sunderland finished the match with 10 men after captain Dan Neil received a second booking, yet Burnley managed just a single shot on target. Despite starting strong with two wins, Burnley has seen significant roster changes including the departures of Sander Berge, Anass Zaroury, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson. Additionally, Irish defender Dara O'Shea was left out of the squad, leading Parker to use two goalkeepers and untested youngsters on the bench. Burnley’s attempts were flat with just one close effort from Andreas Hountondji before first-half injury time.
Following Neil's red card for a late challenge on Clarets substitute Zeki Amdouni, Sunderland's defensive cohesion and pressing paid off. Sunderland managed slick passing and movement with Mundle replacing Jack Clarke effectively, scoring past goalkeeper James Trafford. Sunderland's game was tight, they pressed high, recovered balls, and created many chances. Sunderland now leads the Championship table, driven by its fast, fluid game play.
Regis Le Bris praised the team’s early display and team spirit in defense, acknowledging the great cohesion with fans but noting room for improvement. Parker lamented Burnley’s lack of intensity and fluidity, attributing the loss to Sunderland’s high-paced and well-synchronized play.
Both teams have pivotal games next; Sunderland face Portsmouth aiming to sustain their triumphant streak, while Burnley must improve to regain footing in their upcoming Lancashire derby against Blackburn Rovers.
