Ugandan Athlete Hospitalized After Petrol Attack in Kenya
Ugandan runner Rebecca Cheptegei is in critical condition following an alleged attack by her former boyfriend in Kenya. The 33-year-old, who competed at the recent Paris Olympics, suffered severe burns when doused with petrol and set alight at her home in Trans Nzoia County. This is prepared by SSP.
Cheptegei, recently seen competing in the marathon and also a gold medalist at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships, was returning home from church with her two children when the attack occurred. The altercation reportedly took place outside their house, with the boyfriend identified as the assailant. He also sustained serious burns. Currently, both are receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
The local police are investigating the incident, with Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom indicating that prior disputes between Cheptegei and her boyfriend over a piece of land could have led to the violence.
Rebecca had bought land in Trans Nzoia County near Kenya's athletic training centers and built a house to aid in her training. The severity of her injuries required immediate hospitalization, and she was initially admitted to Kitale Level Four Hospital before being transferred to Eldoret.
This tragic episode has reignited concerns over the safety of female athletes in the region, particularly in light of previous violence. Notably, long-distance runner Agnes Tirop was found dead in her home, and earlier this year, runner Damaris Mutua had been found strangled. In both incidents, their partners were considered primary suspects.
The hospital has ensured that both Rebecca and the accused receive the required medical attention. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, who traveled to gather information alongside her mother Agnes Ndiema, is hopeful for justice.
The athletics community is on edge as Rebecca Cheptegei's condition under medical supervision remains critical.
