Instagram Introduces New Features for Direct Messages
Instagram’s direct messaging (DM) platform is evolving as key to user engagement. Recent updates are set to enhance the chat experience significantly.
Instagram is adding exciting features to DMs, including improved photo editing capabilities and supportive stickers. Users can now edit photos by drawing on them or adding stickers before sending them. This functionality mirrors similar editing tools available for Instagram Stories. Furthermore, users can create custom stickers using their own photos. Overall, the photo editing options in chats are expanding, aligning more closely with those seen in Stories.
Alongside photo editing, Instagram introduces various new chat themes that alter the design and aesthetics of DMs. For instance, themes such as a fall-inspired layout or an album promotion from pop star Sabrina Carpenter are being implemented. Additionally, users can personalize their Notes — the status-like messages visible at the top of the DM inbox — by adding a birthday cake icon.
Direct messaging is increasingly crucial for Instagram, according to Adam Mosseri. The firm focuses on expanding available tools and features in this space. Messaging plays a significant role in the content ranking system on the platform. In July, Mosseri highlighted that one crucial factor Instagram considers for ranking content is the volume of DMs a post receives.
Adam Mosseri advises creators, "Think about making content that people would want to send to a friend, to someone that they care about, and it will help your reach over time."
