Sony PS5 Pro Will Not Feature Built-In Disc Drive
Sony has announced the PS5 Pro, priced at $699.99, which features a larger GPU, enhanced ray tracing support, and AI-driven upscaling for significantly improved performance. However, unlike standard versions, it does not include a built-in disc drive. To play physical games, users must purchase and install the PS5 Disc Drive separately for an additional $79.99, bringing the total to $779.98 for both components. This is prepared by SSP.
Hideaki Nishino confirms in a PlayStation Blog post that the PS5 Pro will be available as a disc-less console, akin to the current digital model and the redesigned PS5 Slim. Although some consumers might find it irritating that a premium "Pro" console doesn’t come with its own disc drive, this move aligns with Sony’s strategy from earlier releases. Previously, they also sold a PS5 Slim Digital Edition with an optional, separate disc drive attachment.
Given the increased performance capabilities of the PS5 Pro, such as a GPU with up to 45% faster rendering and a generous 2TB SSD for storing digital downloads, it’s marketed as the most powerful gaming console to date. The bonus features offer substantial technical advancements, making it appealing despite its higher cost and additional accessory necessity for physical games.
The PS5 Pro and its disc drive attachment will both be crucial to existing PS5 owners or new buyers looking to transition seamlessly to the faster, more powerful PS5 Pro system. These items are available for pre-order starting September 26, ahead of the November 7 launch. It's wise to purchase the disc drive promptly due to possible shortages, especially with holiday demand approaching.
The disc drive, compatible with all PS5 variants, is easy to install and gives gamers access to their physical games and movies from previous PS5 versions. It can be found at popular retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and Target, although swift sell-outs are likely once holiday shopping peaks or when pre-orders commence.
For those looking for an unparalleled gaming performance, the PS5 Pro with its cutting-edge hardware represents a significant leap forward. However, the combined price of $780 might pose a consideration for many buyers, factoring in the additional cost required for physical game compatibility.
