'Black Panther' South African Star Connie Chiume Dies At 72
Connie Chiume, a notable South African actress renowned for her roles in the Black Panther series, has passed away at age 72. Known internationally for her role as Zawavari, a Mining Tribe Elder in Black Panther, Chiume also starred in its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Beyoncé’s musical film Black Is King.
Born in Welkom, South Africa, on June 5, 1952, Chiume was the fifth of nine children. Initially trained as a nurse, she transitioned to acting in 1977, joining the musical Sola Sola in Greece. Her television career took off with roles in South African series like Inkom’ Edla Yodwa, Rhythm City, and Zone 14, for which she won numerous accolades including the NTVA Avanti Award and a SAFTA.
In 2022, she received a lifetime achievement award from the South African Film and TV Awards. Before her death, Chiume expressed her wish to be remembered for the unique impact she had on individuals' lives. She is survived by her two sons and two daughters.
