High School Graduation Highlights Grier Henchy in Mom Brooke Shields’ 1997 Wedding Dress
Brooke Shields, who first wore the corseted ivory satin gown when marrying tennis star Andre Agassi in 1997, has always shared her wardrobe treasures with her daughters. So, when Shields’ daughter Grier Hammond Henchy graduated high school, she chose to wear her mother’s wedding dress, Page Six reported. Embracing her mom's philosophy of "nothing is off-limits," Grier modified the gown to fit her style. "We had to re-bone it a little bit so it was tight and sleek. We took out all the poof because I didn’t want it poofy. And we made it strapless," said Grier, who has just started her freshman year at Wake Forest University.
Despite Shields and Agassi’s marriage ending in 1999, before Shields married Chris Henchy, Grier's father, in 2001, the dress represented a full-circle moment for Shields. "Although Andre was a good guy and our marriage didn’t work out, the dress honors something significant," Shields remarked. Shields found it honorable that Grier chose to wear her dress, even reflecting humorously, "Normally they don’t think I’m cool."
In a discussion with Oprah Winfrey during Oprah Daily’s "The Life You Want" class, Shields recalled one of her daughters being surprised by the dusty treasures in her closet, hinting, "If you’re not going to wear this stuff, I’m gonna wear it!"
Indeed, Shields’ daughters don’t hesitate to raid her extensive wardrobe. Before Grier, Shields’ firstborn, Rowan Francis Henchy, made waves by wearing a scarlet red dress designed by Richard Tyler – originally worn by Shields at the 1998 Golden Globes – to her high school prom in 2021.
Additionally, Grier wore a black Richard Tyler gown to the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute red carpet, a dress that her mother had showcased at a 2006 event. Grier also dazzled in one of Shields' old gold dresses recently. Shields finds joy in giving her classic outfits another life, stating, "Just having them repurposed feels good; otherwise, they would've just collected dust or ended up in an auction."
Despite such access, some vintage items still make their way to auction. Shields plans to sell the iconic jeans from her 1980 Calvin Klein shoot – estimated at $50,000 – at the upcoming Studio Auctions event titled "From Bombshells to Blasters: An Auction You Can’t Refuse." While Grier might not have gotten her hands on these jeans, she certainly wasn’t short of her mom’s stylish hand-me-downs.
