ZZ Top is an iconic American blues-rock band founded in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band's lineup remained virtually unchanged from the day it was founded until the death of bassist Dusty Hill in 2021. In addition to him, it has always been Billy Gibbons (guitar, vocals) and Frank Beard (drums). Bill Ham remained the constant producer of ZZ Top from the moment of its foundation until September 2006.
The Singer's Room website writes, "The band's style can be defined as blues, blues-rock with elements of boogie-woogie, hard rock, and country." Billy Gibbons himself said about ZZ Top as follows, "Are we a blues band? Well, we're more like interpreters of the blues".
Their career began in the 70s with blues and blues rock. At that time, ZZ Top experimented a lot with the sound. In the mid-1980s, they came to a combination of blues rock and pop music, which generally brought them extreme popularity.
After releasing two highly successful albums in 1983 and 1985, they tried to return to the creativity of their early career throughout the 90s and 2000s, but only achieved this in 2012.
ZZ Top's lyrics are mostly frivolous, full of humor and slang. The band has a striking look due to the two long beards of Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill. At the same time, the third member, drummer Frank Beard, whose name literally stands for this word, is the only one in the group who does not have it.
