John Fury, the father of WBC heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury, expressed confidence that his son will defeat WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF world champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury Sr. boldly stated this in a commentary to Express, urging the Ukrainian boxer's supporters not to count on his success in a fight with the "Gypsy King." SSPDaily learned more about this incident.
"I want to address the people who are cheering Usyk. Your guy will not cope with this job. All those who think that a bloated middleweight can win, forget it. Tyson will be ready, the question is, will Usyk be ready?
Tyson is in good shape, isn't he? I was very upset about that cut because Tyson was in great shape. Our team did a great job," said the British boxer's father.
As a reminder, the Usyk-Fury fight will take place on May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight was scheduled for February 17, but it was postponed due to an injury sustained by the Briton during one of his sparring sessions.
In order to avoid another disruption of the fight, the organizers have established sanctions that will be applied to Usyk or Fury if one of them does not enter the ring on May 18. The boxers face a huge fine if they refuse to fight on the scheduled date.
The winner of the Usyk-Fury fight will become the first absolute world champion in the heavyweight division in the 21st century.
The last "absolute" in heavyweight was Lennox Lewis, who gained this status in 1999 when he defeated Evander Holyfield. Back then, the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles were at stake. The WBO belt was recognized as equivalent in 2007, so the winner of the fight between Usyk and Fury will become the first ever "absolute" heavyweight champion with four major titles.
