Avocados are rich in vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and fiber, making them a valuable addition to any diet. However, they have one significant drawback – they tend to spoil quickly.
SSPDaily advises consumers to inspect avocados closely when purchasing, as they often become too soft in supermarkets. Opting for firmer avocados allows them to ripen at home, offering a more extended usage window.
Storing avocados at home poses challenges, and they can quickly turn into unappetizing brown mush. Additionally, using only half of an avocado and saving the rest for later presents another issue.
To address these concerns, a resourceful avocado enthusiast has devised a clever method for preserving this nutritious yet perishable fruit, ensuring it remains usable for several weeks.
Making mashed avocados
The woman shared her approach on the Delish Recipes Family Facebook page, posting a picture of a baking sheet covered with aluminum foil, featuring neatly shaped balls of mashed avocado.
She explained her process: "I started freezing avocados! I mash them and use a small cookie scoop and then freeze them! Yes, that's right. You can freeze avocados to turn them into guacamole, smoothies, or spreads at any time. They don't turn brown at all, and when they're frozen in a few hours, I throw them in a large ziplock bag. I don't add anything to them."
This clever trick prevents the wastage of avocados, and the frozen mashed avocado can be easily incorporated into guacamole, smoothies, or spreads whenever needed.
Community members embraced the idea, with one suggesting it's a great addition to smoothies. Another expressed the intention to try the trick, while a third hailed it as fantastic.
Kidspot's Kitchen culinary expert offered additional tips to enhance the functionality of this life hack. He recommended using ripe but not overripe avocados to avoid mushiness upon thawing. Adding a bit of lemon or lime juice before freezing helps prevent browning upon thawing, and storing the "balls" in an airtight bag ensures they remain fresh in the freezer for about a month. However, they should be used immediately after thawing.
