Caring for a picky berry: how to fertilize blueberries in spring for a rich harvest
Although this crop yields without fertilization in forests, this is not the case if you grow it in the garden. At the very least, you should note that blueberries need acidic soil. Therefore, it will have to be additionally acidified on the site if necessary. Do not forget about fertilizing. This was reported by SSPDaily.
The right time
The first fertilization of blueberries in spring is carried out in late March-early April. The main sign that it's time to fertilize is swollen buds that have already appeared on the branches.
The second fertilization is applied around the end of May-beginning of June when the plant has already faded.
The third and final feeding should be planned for the harvest period.
Water regimen
For the first time in the spring, experts advise applying nitrogen-containing fertilizers that will help the plant grow after winter and saturate it with the necessary nutrients. The best option is nitroammophoska or ammonium sulfate. It is recommended to apply them immediately after watering the soil.
After that, the soil under the bushes is mulched with peat, pine cones, or other appropriate materials.
For the second feeding, it is necessary to prepare magnesium sulfate or potassium sulfate.
What you should not use for fertilization
Experts do not advise adding ash, humus, manure, or litter under the bushes. They make the soil alkaline, while blueberries like an acidic environment. After such "fertilization," the plant will not yield a large harvest and may even stop growing.
