Do carrots in the kitchen quickly wither and become moldy? Here's how to extend its life by several weeks or even months
With the onset of cold weather, people cook more nutritious and high-calorie dishes - thick soups and stews, which usually include carrots. This is an indispensable vegetable in winter cooking, containing many vitamins and minerals.
Therefore, according to SSPDaily, such a healthy root vegetable should be present in your kitchen in sufficient quantities. And if this is the case, then sooner or later you will face the question: "Where and how to store carrots in the house to keep them fresh and not spoil?"
You can, of course, just put them in the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator, but this is not the best solution. Here's a more convenient and practical way to store carrots.
How to keep carrots fresh and crisp in the refrigerator
Carrots are afraid of sunlight, which makes them spoil quickly. And if you want to keep them as long as possible, your task is to prevent this from happening.
The best option in this case is a cool, dry basement or cellar. Put the carrots there, and you don't have to worry about their fate for at least six months.
If you don't have such a basement, you should keep it in the refrigerator, in an airtight bag with a zipper that prevents moisture from entering. Of course, in this case, we are not talking about months of storage, but for one or two weeks the carrots will definitely remain fresh.
In addition, if you want this vegetable to retain its qualities as long as possible and not spoil, do not wash it, unless, of course, you are going to use it right away.
Remember that mold quickly forms on washed carrots!
Another tip: when you buy fresh carrots with green tops, be sure to cut them off, as the green will draw moisture from the vegetables, which means that the carrots will quickly dry out and wilt.
When storing carrots properly, it is also important to keep them away from fruits and vegetables that produce ethylene gas, which enhances the ripening process. This primarily applies to bananas, pears, apples, and tomatoes.
How to store carrots in the freezer
If you've already washed and chopped your carrots, but you want to keep them fresh for as long as possible, the best way to do so is to put them in the freezer.
To do this, spread them out on a baking sheet and "send" them to the freezer. And when the slices are frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag or other airtight container. In this form, carrots can be stored for several months without compromising quality.
