Life is full of secret temptations, and, unfortunately, marriage doesn't change much in this regard. It can be difficult to resist the urge to cheat on your partner.
The online edition of the New York Post addressed the topic of adultery and published an article: "How to beat the urge to cheat". Here are some tips from Lauren LaRusso, a psychotherapist from Old Saybrook, Connecticut.
The first thing she told her Instagram followers: "Being attracted to other people is normal, even if you're married or in a serious relationship. After all, we're not dead yet.
However, after that, the expert gave people on the verge of cheating a number of tips designed to help them get out of this situation.
"So," LaRusso said, "if you feel tempted to have an affair on the side, take it as a serious warning sign that your marriage is cracking.
Here are 3 tips from LaRusso, marriage-saving actions that a potential cheater can take to avoid crossing the final line.
"First," she said, "you can reach out to your spouse and use that as a wake-up call.
Say something like: "I think our marriage is in jeopardy. Let's talk about how I feel," LaRusso advised.
The expert then urged those flirting with infidelity to consider seeking professional help.
"You can pull your partner aside and say it's time to go to couples counseling to talk about what you need in your marriage in a safe and neutral space," she said.
Her last piece of advice was to look within yourself.
"You can ask yourself what you need and what you want, what you are drawn to look for outside of your marriage," LaRusso summarized.
