It turns out that milk can be plant-based and is easy to make at home from nuts and grains. In our case, we are talking about almond, oat, and cashew milk.
The SSPDaily website asked three shop owners who regularly prepare plant-based milk for advice. Here are the recipes they shared with readers.
To prepare the product, you will need:
- Blender
- Fine mesh filter
- Cheesecloth
- A large bowl
How to make almond milk
Ingredients
- 3 cups of filtered water
- 2 cups of raw almonds
- 4 Medjool dates, peeled and chopped
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract or 1 vanilla pod, cut lengthwise, without seeds
- 1 tbsp coconut oil, optional
- a pinch of sea salt, optional
Instructions.
In a blender, combine 1 cup of water, almonds, dates, vanilla, coconut oil, and salt. Blend on low speed until smooth.
Add the remaining 2 cups of water and blend for another minute or until smooth.
To strain, place a large fine-mesh sieve lined with two layers of cheesecloth in a large bowl. Make sure there is enough cloth around the edges to gather the ends and make a bag.
Pour half of the mixed mixture into the center of the cheesecloth and then gather the ends to make a pouch. Squeeze the almond milk through a sieve into a bowl.
Pour the remaining fiber (you can save it for making protein bars) into another bowl, then repeat the process with the remaining mixture.
Serve chilled. Store in a closed, airtight bottle (jar). The shelf life is up to 3 days.
How to make oat milk
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of very cold water
- 1 cup of organic oatmeal
Instructions.
In a blender, combine the water and oatmeal and blend on high speed for no more than 20 seconds.
Place a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth over a large bowl. Slowly pour the mixture into the center of the sieve and let it drain until only the pulp remains. If there are any pieces of oats left in the strained liquid, strain again.
Cool and drink.
How to make cashew milk
- Ingredients:
- 4 cups of water
- 1 cup raw unsalted cashews
- 1 tbsp maple syrup, optional
- A pinch of salt, optional
Instructions.
If you have a high-powered blender (high-speed, with multiple blending options), combine the water, cashews, maple syrup, and salt, and blend on high until smooth.
If you don't have a very powerful blender (low speed and no blending options), soak the cashews in water in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours (or overnight). Strain and follow the instructions above.
Store the product in an airtight bottle or jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
