Lewis Hamilton and George Russell Suffer from Heatstroke at Singapore GP, Confirm Mercedes
Mercedes confirmed that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell experienced "borderline heatstroke" following the Singapore Grand Prix. Both drivers skipped post-race media obligations under the advice of team doctors after finishing sixth and fourth respectively.
*Challenging Conditions at Night Race*
F1’s night race in Singapore brought harsh, humid conditions else both drivers, who didn't attend post-race media commitments for medical reasons. "Due to the severe exertions of today’s race, neither George nor Lewis will be in the media pen tonight," stated a Mercedes spokesperson.
Race and Strategy Developments
Hamilton, who started the race first, slipped to sixth due to a flawed strategy. Russell began further back but finished fourth, leading team boss Toto Wolff to apologize to Hamilton for the misguided tire strategy.
Driver Reflections
Despite not addressing the press directly, Mercedes released comments from the drivers. Hamilton reflected, "This year continues to challenge us, but we push as hard as we can. We make our decisions with the right intentions, though not always getting them right." Russell added, "After a tough Friday, we likely would have settled for P4. Our qualifying pace hinted at more, but today was tough both pace-wise and physically."
He also observed the competitive field, "McLarens showed exceptional pace, and Max [Verstappen] had the edge on us. We managed to fend off Charles [Leclerc] from Ferrari in the closing stages, aiming for damage limitation."
Norris Remains Driven Despite Point Gap
Lando Norris, securing his third victory of the season in this race, tightened the gap behind Verstappen in the drivers' standings but still trails by 52 points. Acknowledging Red Bull's strong presence, he stated, "We are doing our best, but facing Max and Red Bull, the most dominant team pairing in recent memory, presents significant challenges."
