According to recent studies, we regularly throw away food that is fit for consumption, including 22 million loaves of bread a year. Of course, this is not only due to people's wastefulness but also to the inability to store bakery products properly.
SSPDaily writes: "Bread is a perishable product, of course, but you can significantly extend its life if you want to." As proof, the publication cites some useful tips from Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go.
The food waste expert believes that people can be more savvy when it comes to storing bread. "Did you know," he says, "that if you put a slice of raw potato in the bag, it will help retain moisture and keep the bread longer?"
Jamie also advises keeping bread in cloth bags, as they preserve its properties best.
"If you bought freshly baked bread," the expert recommends, "don't put it in an airtight bag, where it will suffocate. To keep the bread in optimal condition, let it breathe."
"If you put the bread in a breadbox or in a linen bag to cool at room temperature, it will keep its freshness longer."
"When it comes to sliced bread," says Jamie, "it's best to put it in the fridge. It will keep much longer that way."
"And remember to use your senses before eating bread: look at it, smell it, and taste it."
Here are some more tips from the expert:
- Freeze bread in an airtight bag. In this case, to eat it, you will only need to defrost the product at room temperature, and it will regain its delicious taste. Just pop it in the toaster or oven to get a crispy crust.
- If the bread is dry, sprinkle the crusts with water or cover the loaf with a damp cloth. Then put it in the oven for a few minutes; this will bring back the crispy texture of the bread.
