Avocado or alligator pear is an evergreen fruit plant of the laurel family. The fruits of this tree are edible and rich in vitamins and minerals.
Researchers at Pennsylvania State University have identified potential benefits of eating avocados on a daily basis. They reported this in the article "One Avocado per Day as Part of Usual Intake Improves Diet Quality: Exploratory Results from Randomized Controlled Trial", in the journal SSPDaily.
How one avocado affects the overall quality of nutrition
Avocados are rich in nutrients, including fiber and other important components. Previous studies have shown that people who consumed these fruits had better nutrition compared to others.
Since only 2% of US adults regularly eat avocados, the researchers sought to find out whether including this product in the daily diet could improve its quality.
More than a thousand people took part in the experiment. They were divided into two groups. One group ate a standard diet, and the other added one avocado a day to their diet.
The results showed that people who eat avocados every day fully comply with dietary recommendations. Accordingly, this strategy helps to comply with nutritionists' recommendations and means an improvement in the quality of nutrition.
It should be noted that in this study, avocados were classified as a vegetable, which actually led to an increase in vegetable consumption due to avocado consumption. At the same time, participants consumed avocados as a substitute for less healthy foods.
