What to feed your dog and what to avoid: A guide to dog nutrition
Feeding our beloved pets is a responsibility that requires certain rules. Although you may be tempted to give in to the pleading dog eyes at the dinner table, some human foods can be harmful to them. SSPDaily will tell you what foods should not be given to our furry friends and share recommendations for their diet.
As for meat, it is important to avoid fatty products and sausages. Excessive fat in these products can lead to health problems. Instead, choose lean meats such as poultry, beef, veal, and their offal such as liver, tongue, heart, beef udders, lips, ears, and tails.
You should also avoid pork and processed meat products. Pork is usually too fatty for dogs, and industrially produced meat products often contain additives, spices, and preservatives that can cause allergic reactions. It is also advisable to refrain from feeding dogs fried meat or other fried foods, as they can cause gastrointestinal problems and even pancreatitis.
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, it's important to note that dogs have sensitive stomachs and may not tolerate certain foods. For example, citrus fruits that contain acid can cause stomach upset. Grapes should also be avoided as they can cause gastrointestinal upset. In addition, avocados, especially its pit and peel, can lead to indigestion or vomiting.
However, in reasonable amounts, fruits and vegetables can be beneficial for dogs. Carrots, cauliflower, zucchini, and cucumbers are generally accepted well by dogs. Pumpkin and beets in boiled or stewed form can be included in the diet, and fresh vegetables should be finely chopped or grated. It is advisable to refrain from feeding dogs potatoes.
When considering human food for dogs, certain options such as cereals, cottage cheese, and eggs can be introduced. Some suitable cereals include buckwheat, oatmeal, and rice (in moderation). However, cereals such as wheat, pearl barley, semolina and corn, as well as legumes, should be excluded.
As for soups and borscht, a single serving is usually harmless. However, veterinarians warn that dogs may not digest a variety of ingredients well. It is best to combine no more than two ingredients, such as porridge with meat or vegetables, cottage cheese with eggs, etc.
It is very important to know what should be completely excluded from the dog's diet. Sweets, especially chocolate, spicy and salty foods, bread, sultanas, and nuts should not be given to dogs, as they can be difficult to digest or have a toxic effect.
In addition, it is important to emphasize that chicken drumsticks should never be given to dogs. Chewing on the tubular bones can lead to sharp fragments that will not be fully digested and can cause damage to internal organs, bleeding, or even death. If desired, carefully remove the cartilage from the chicken bones and offer them as a safer alternative treat.
