Trinity, Pentecost, or Green Sunday is a special holiday, and its celebration is tied to Easter. That is why its date changes every year. Trinity falls on the 50th day after the celebration of the Holy Resurrection of Christ.
In 2024, Eastern Rite Christians celebrate Easter on May 5, so the Trinity falls on June 23. Christians of the Western rite in 2024 celebrate Easter quite early – on March 31, and therefore the Trinity is early - on May 19.
Traditionally, the Trinity is celebrated for a whole week, starting on Sunday. SSPDaily told more about this holiday.
Trinity: history, what to do on the Green Holidays
The Bible says that God is the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is where the main name of the holiday comes from.
According to church tradition, on the 50th day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit appeared to his disciples. The apostles then received the gift of healing from him, and learned all languages, which helped them spread Christianity around the world.
Festive worship and large vespers are held in churches on Trinity Day. The main symbols of the holiday for Christians of the Eastern rite are green branches of birch and other trees. They are traditionally used to decorate houses and churches. According to popular belief, these branches help to bring prosperity and happiness to the home.
During the liturgy, Orthodox priests wear green vestments, while Catholic priests wear white.
After the service, people go to visit or gather at home, treat their friends and family to a large festive loaf, and set a lavish table.
Why the Trinity is called the Green Holidays
People traditionally call this day the Green Holidays. The name comes from pre-Christian times. Back then, our ancestors celebrated the end of the spring and the beginning of the summer calendar period. And what better way to symbolize life than green leaves?
On the eve of the Green Holidays, on Saturday, before sunrise, young girls would go to the forest and field and pick fragrant herbs. In the evening, the boys would cut branches from linden, birch, oak, and maple trees to decorate the house. They would also decorate the shutters and icons in the house with the potion. It was considered a grave sin not to decorate the house with flowers.
If the leaves remained green and fresh until the next morning, it was believed that this year illness and misfortune would bypass the house. Trinity Sunday was called Pentecost because it was the 50th day after the resurrection of Christ.
