Champions League Triumph for Man City Secured by New Signing Miedema's Debut Goal
Vivianne Miedema made headlines with her summer move from Arsenal to Manchester City, one of the most talked-about transfers in women's football, BBC reported. Tonight, she debuted for City in the Champions League, playing away against Paris FC, and impressively demonstrated her goal-scoring abilities to manager Gareth Taylor.
The Dutch striker, the leading scorer in the WSL and for her national team, netted City's opener in the 36th minute. Miedema executed a precise volley following Jess Park's fine setup on the right. Two minutes later, England international Park added a goal herself, thanks to Lauren Hemp's brilliant backheel in the box.
Despite traveling to Paris without their record goalscorer Khadija Shaw due to a visa issue, City didn’t falter. Mary Fowler capitalized on a lapse by Paris FC's goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to tap in City's third goal in the 49th minute. Park scored her second of the match and City’s fourth, after Nnadozie’s valiant save of a Hemp header, and substitute Chloe Kelly bundled in from close range 11 minutes from time.
Paris FC, who previously knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League at the same stage last season, struggled throughout the first leg at Stade Charlety. Clara Mateo provided their best opportunity, but City’s debutant keeper Ayaka Yamashita made a crucial save, ensuring a clean sheet.
City will face Paris FC again at the Joie Stadium on Thursday, September 26 for the return leg. The question remains: with Miedema’s impressive scoring record, how many more records can she break this season?
