Professional Footballer Charged in £600,000 Cannabis Smuggling Case
Professional footballer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged in connection with the attempted importation of £600,000 worth of cannabis, BBC reported. The 33-year-old striker, who currently plays for Greenock Morton in the Scottish Championship, was arrested at his home in Gourock, Inverclyde, and later transported to Carlisle for questioning.
The arrest followed the National Crime Agency (NCA) discovery of 60kg of cannabis hidden in suitcases arriving at Stansted Airport from Bangkok, Thailand. This event marked a significant operation involving both Border Force and NCA officers. The class B drug, discovered on September 2, led to the immediate detention of two women, aged 28 and 32, who were later charged with drug importation offenses. They have appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court and are due in Chelmsford Crown Court on October 1.
Emmanuel-Thomas, a former England under-17 and under-19 international, boasts a diverse football career that includes previous stints with clubs such as Livingston, Aberdeen, Ipswich Town, Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, Arsenal, and Thai team PTT Rayong. His current contract with Greenock Morton was signed in July for a six-month term. He is scheduled to appear before Carlisle Magistrates' Court for the drug importation charges.
The NCA recently issued warnings to travelers from Thailand, Canada, and the United States, emphasizing severe consequences and potential jail sentences for cannabis smuggling into the UK. This year, the amount of cannabis confiscated has already exceeded three times the total seized in 2023.
NCA Senior Investigating Officer David Phillips stated, "We continue to work with our partners like Border Force to crack down on both the couriers and organizers of drug smuggling operations. We urge anyone approached to participate in smuggling to consider the life-altering risks and penalties, which can include up to 14 years in prison."
