29 days of heat on Earth: this year's February has become the warmest one ever
The year 2024 is likely to be even hotter than the previous one. As a result, January has already been officially recognized as the hottest on record, and now February has followed suit, with last month's temperature 0.81°C above average. At the same time, if we look at Europe separately from the rest of the world, last month's temperature was 5.94°F (3.3°C) above the February 1991-2020 average. Thus, February 2024 will be the ninth consecutive month to break temperature records due to global warming.
SSPDaily tells about it.
Scientists note that the fact that the average temperature in February this year was 0.81°C warmer than the global average for February 1991-2000 is alarming.
According to Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, this February joined a long line of records for the past few months, and greenhouse gas emissions are to blame. He also stated that such events do not seem to be "surprising" as the ongoing warming of the climate system inevitably leads to new extreme temperatures.
A further rise in global temperatures will lead to mass starvation, the extinction of up to half of animal species, and the emigration of millions of people from countries that will become uninhabitable, experts warn.
As a reminder, experts from the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences have drawn up maps showing three areas that are likely to be affected by this year's record heat wave. The main reason for the incredible heat is El Niño, which contributes to the rise in sea temperatures observed over the past few years.
