Bike-sharing problems: how bike cemeteries appear in China. Photo
Bike-sharing is becoming increasingly popular in many major cities around the world. In China, it has reached incredible proportions.
Today, 16 million bikes are available for rent in this country, and they are provided by more than 70 companies. Moreover, in China, supply far outstrips demand: Shanghai alone has 1.5 million bicycles (for comparison, Paris has about 20,000 rental bikes).
Recently, one of the largest bike-sharing companies, Bluegogo, went bankrupt, and all of their parking lots became inoperable in almost one night. Thus, thousands of bicycles are abandoned on the streets and have become a common sight in densely populated cities in China.
Unfortunately, Bluegogo is not the first bike-sharing company to close. Local authorities have no choice but to make bicycle dumps in the hope that the former owners will still be willing to take the vehicles.
