A tragedy occurred in Austria, during which a zoo keeper was killed. The woman was attacked by a rhinoceros, fatally wounding her.
The attack also resulted in the hospitalization of another zookeeper who was nearby, CNN reports. The fatal accident occurred in the city of Salzburg.
A rhinoceros attacked a 33-year-old woman while she was doing her job in an enclosure at the zoo early in the morning. According to the zoo spokeswoman Hellbrunn, the victim was doing a routine job - lubricating the animal with insect repellent.
Suddenly, the rhino became aggressive and killed the caretaker on the spot. A 34-year-old man rushed to his colleague's aid, trying to scare the zoo animal away. Instead, he was also targeted, but survived. He underwent emergency surgery in the hospital.
"We are absolutely shocked and do not yet know how it happened. In the morning, rhinos are usually smeared with insect repellent. This always happens in a protected area," zoo spokeswoman Ulrike Ullmann told CNN.
After the rhino attack, the zoo was closed for two days.
