Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Charlie Day’s Son Has Their Sense of Humor
Mary Elizabeth Ellis has known her husband, Charlie Day, for over half of her life. This strong bond leads them to share a unique sense of humor.
Their son, Russell, seems to inherit this humor as well. Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly at the premiere of the Netflix comedy "A Man on the Inside," Ellis, 45, revealed insights into their family dynamic. "Sometimes we feel like part of the same person in the ways we make each other laugh, and also how annoyed we get with each other," she shared about her relationship with Day, 48. "Nobody makes me laugh more than him, except maybe our 13-year-old son, because we’ve raised him with our sense of humor together."
In "A Man on the Inside," Ellis stars with Ted Danson and Stephanie Beatriz. Danson portrays a retiree-turned-private-investigator working undercover in a nursing home. Ellis plays Emily, a character that allows her to navigate the joys and challenges of being a TV mom. "[It’s] super fun to be a mom to young actors on set and be like, ‘OK, you need to get in line,’" she remarked. She balances this with warmth, adding softly, "I’m your mom, but also I’m not your mom. So, if you have an issue, go ask your mom."
Unlike past projects, her husband did not join her for the first season of "A Man on the Inside." Ellis has starred in 37 episodes of the popular dark comedy "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia," where Day plays Charlie Kelly. The couple has also acted together in "Reno 911!" and the 2023 film "Fool’s Paradise," which Day both wrote and directed.
Ellis disclosed in a Us Weekly interview from 2019, "The hard things are when he directs me because I don’t take direction well. I think I’m pretty perfect." At the premiere, she mentioned her role required balancing comedic elements while respecting the show’s serious moments. "I learned how to trust myself more as an actor because so much of it is really funny, but there are also some really emotional moments," she explained. "It’s about trusting Ted and making that connection with him, which was lovely and a great practice."
"A Man on the Inside" premieres on November 21 on Netflix.
