India plans to optimize retail trade on long-distance trains. Tenders for this initiative will open, inviting 500 suppliers to work on long-distance trains in the Mumbai division.
The retail services will cover a diverse range of products, from staples to cosmetics, books and FMCG. The new initiative is designed to provide the convenience of seamless shopping while traveling with a concept reminiscent of airline travel, writes SSPDaily.
"The tender process aims to attract 500 suppliers to operate on long-distance trains, offering a diverse range of products. From basic foodstuffs to cosmetics, books and everyday necessities. Passengers will soon have the opportunity to shop on the go, changing the dynamics of traveling in a bustling city," say local authorities.
It is noted that the innovative approach not only meets the needs of passengers, but also emphasizes the desire to provide a holistic and enjoyable journey. This strategic move also aims to curb unauthorized trading on trains while increasing fare revenue.
"The move is expected to provide better control and management of vendors by the railway authorities, contributing to a safer and more organized travel environment," local officials said.
At the same time, premium express trains such as the Mahanagari Express, Rajdhani and Duronto will be exempt from the scheme, providing a targeted approach to other long-distance trains. The licensed vendors will be allowed to sell a variety of products, including food, travel goods, mobile phone/laptop accessories, stationery and newspapers/magazines/books, as well as cosmetic products.
"Both passengers and businessmen can look forward to the positive impact of this forward-thinking initiative on both the rail system and the overall urban travel experience," local officials added.
