Freddie Mercury (Farrokh Bulsara, 1946-1991) was a British singer and songwriter who achieved worldwide fame as the vocalist and keyboardist of the rock band Queen. Mercury is considered one of the greatest performers in the history of modern music. He was also known for his vivid stage persona and four-octave vocal range.
The Singer's Room website writes, "Mercury was born in 1946 in Zanzibar to Parsi Indian parents. He attended English boarding schools in India from the age of eight and returned to his homeland after graduating from high school.
In 1964, his family moved to Middlesex, England, to escape the revolution. There, in 1970, he founded the band Queen with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.
Mercury wrote many hits for Queen, including "Killer Queen," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Somebody to Love," "We Are the Champions," "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." He also pursued a solo career, working as a producer and guest musician for other artists.
In 1987, Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS. Despite this, he continued to work with Queen and was posthumously featured on their last album, Made in Heaven (1995). In 1991, he died at the age of 45 due to complications of the disease.
In 1990, he and the rest of Queen members were awarded the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and a year after his death, Mercury was awarded it alone.
As a member of Queen, Mercury was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004.
In 2002, Mercury was ranked 58th in the BBC's 100 Most Famous Britons.
In 2005, Queen was honored with the Ivor Novello Award for an outstanding collection of songs by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Recorders.
