A man realized that he was related to the mother of his two children after he tried to save her life by donating one of his kidneys.
This was reported by SSPDaily
He knew nothing about his biological family because he was part of a closed adoption and was adopted two minutes after his birth.
His wife, to whom he had been married for six years, needed a new kidney after she fell ill following the birth of their son. They "checked her relatives and none of them were a suitable or viable donor," so he was going to get tested.
"I knew it would be unlikely, so I decided to get tested to see if I could be a donor. The other day I got a call and was told that I was a match. Then the doctor said something about wanting to do additional testing because of some data from the results of the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue test. I didn't think much of it and agreed," he said.
But when the results came back, he learned that he and his wife had an "abnormally high percentage of matches." "I was shocked and confused," he added. He explained that because of the way DNA information is passed down from generation to generation, the match between parents and children can be at least 50 percent, and between siblings, the match can be 0-100 percent.
"Rarely was there such a match between husband and wife. I asked what it meant."
The man said he met his wife eight years ago when he was working away from the office in his hometown.
The couple exchanged phone numbers and agreed to meet whenever he came to her state for work until he was given the opportunity to transfer there permanently. He said: "We are related. No, I'm not kidding. I don't know what to do next, but I know it might not be right. She is my wife and the mother of our children."
Users shared their thoughts on how he should handle this extremely unfortunate situation.
- You're already married and have kids now - you can't take that back, so I don't see much point in blowing up worlds
- You already have kids and they are presumably healthy, since you didn't mention any crazy abnormalities. If you are happy, you are happy. Donate a kidney to your sister-wife and continue to be a great parent to your children
- Everything has been great all this time, there is no point in changing it
