Ancestors were stubborn smokers: linguists reveal the secret of 12 Ukrainian surnames
Every last name in Ukraine hides a story about how it came into being. Some were borne only by Cossacks, others were given to people of foreign origin. There were family names that were given for a certain character trait. And there were those that indicated that a person was very fond of smoking tobacco and stubbornly refused to quit this habit.
SSPDaily analyzed several sources and compiled a list of Ukrainian surnames that are still quite relevant today.

Kripak, Kripakov, Kripachenko - although at first glance it may seem that this family name appeared because of serfdom, this is not entirely true. In ancient times, the word "kripak" was used to describe very strong tobacco. Therefore, there are two versions of the origin of such surnames. In modern Ukraine, there are more than a thousand bearers of such family names.
Liulka, Liulko, Liulchak, Liulchenko - as you can imagine, these surnames were often given to those who loved to smoke a pipe. Today, several thousand people have similar forms.
Kuriy, Kuriychuk - such patrimonial names could be given to those who loved to smoke and could not give up the addiction. In modern Ukraine, about 1,500 people bear them.
Liuliuk, Liuliukov, Liuliukin are a rarer form of surnames that were given in ancient times to people who smoked a pipe. Today, there are only a few hundred bearers in Ukraine.
