Be useful to others
Musk has built his personal and corporate brand on the concept of improving the human race - namely, space exploration and the creation of emission-free cars.
In 2021, on a podcast, he said: "Do things that are good for your fellow human beings, for the world. It's hard to be useful. Very hard."
This philosophy has made Musk the richest man in the world, but is it practical advice?
"'Being useful' is not just about providing a service or product," says Finn Whitley, a leading author of The Small Business Blog, executive coach, former risk manager and investment analyst. Like many other successful people, Elon Musk believes that reading is part of the foundation of success.
He said: "I would advise people to read a lot of books. Try to absorb as much information as possible, and also develop good general knowledge to have at least a rough idea of the knowledge landscape."
Work hard and be persistent
Musk is known for his rigorous work schedule, reaching 80-100 hours a week. He even once tweeted: "No one has ever changed the world by working 40 hours a week."
At the same time, the entrepreneur not only works hard, he also effectively overcomes setbacks.
The first three launches of SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket ended in disaster, and Musk watched as the rockets crashed, burned, ran out of fuel, or fell to the ground. But, like all great innovators, he kept moving forward.
As a result, his Falcon 9 has achieved an impressive 99% success rate with only two failures in 232 launches.
About this difficult experience, Musk said: "Persistence is very important. You must not give up until you are forced to give up."
