South Carolina entomologist Tim Drake told how tourists can detect bedbugs in hotels and avoid taking them home by accident. The expert has his own effective life hacks that he uses while traveling.
Travelers can not only avoid bed bugs on the bed, but also take them with them in their suitcases. The expert's words were reported by Sun News.
How to detect bed bugs
The expert advised to look for insects and their traces on headboards, in the cracks of mattresses and walls around the bed. A telltale sign of infestation is bedbug excrement, which looks like small dark balls.
The presence of redness and rashes on the body after sleeping is a reason to think about it and check the bed again. In addition, the bedding may smell unpleasant, even if it is fresh, which is also a sign of infection.
How not to catch bedbugs
The entomologist said that when he checks in, he first puts his suitcase in the bathroom because bedbugs are least likely to appear there. After inspecting other rooms, he moves his suitcase to a more comfortable place.
Drake recommends keeping clothes in a suitcase, not in a dresser, because pests can live in wardrobes and dressers.
After returning home, the expert wraps the suitcase in a garbage bag and leaves it in a garage or shed, away from the house. Bedbugs, even if they stick to the luggage, will not be able to get home.
