Bear Charges at BC Man in His Garage: A Remarkable and Tense Encounter Goes Viral

A man from British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, Alex Gold, came face-to-face with a bear inside his garage in a shocking encounter filmed on a security camera, which quickly gained tens of millions of views online, CTV News reported. The Coquitlam resident was unloading groceries outside his garage when he unexpectedly bumped into a bear that had wandered in through the open door.

In the video posted on Instagram, Gold can be seen clapping his hands and making loud noises, attempting to back away slowly while situated between the bear and his SUV. The bear charges at him several times during this tense confrontation. "I came back to my car and I bumped into the bear. She was kind of hissing." Gold remarked later in an interview.

Gold was ultimately able to get back into his vehicle and honked the horn to scare the bear and its cub, which had appeared by the end of the footage, away from the property. This cool-headed reaction received praise from experts like Lisa Lopez of the non-profit WildSafeBC. She commended Gold for not panicking and retreating instead of running, which could incite a predator-prey reaction.

According to Lopez, while the bear’s actions appeared menacing, they were more likely defensive "bluff charges." The bear was probably anxious due to the enclosed space and protecting its nearby cub, halting short of contacting Gold directly. The timing of the encounter is relevant since it's the period when bears are preparing for hibernation and actively searching for food sources.
