Due to the abnormal heat, facekinis - masks that completely cover the face from the sun - have become popular in China. They have become much more commonly used on beaches.
These masks, made of lightweight synthetic fabrics such as polyester, have openings for the eyes and nose and resemble balaclavas. The Guardian writes about the novelty that won the hearts of the Chinese.
They are usually monochromatic, but can also be multicolored and with drawings. Facekinis are not something new in China, and they have been popular for many years in Qingdao, a northeastern city known for its beaches. But analysts say this accessory is becoming more and more mainstream.
Fair skin is the ideal of beauty in China and much of Asia. It is considered an indicator of wealth and class because historically it was a privilege to stay out of the sun during the day.
The mask was invented by a local man about seven years ago and is now mass-produced.
The facemask is sold for between two and four dollars, but many residents make their own out of old clothes.
