The Guinness World Records has revoked Bobby's title as the oldest dog in history, purportedly aged 31.
SSPDaily tells about it.
Mark McKinley, the Director of Documentation at GWR, stated that Bobby's record was invalidated following an investigation conducted in line with the organization's verification and appeal procedure.
"Following concerns raised by veterinarians and other experts, both privately and through public commentary, as well as investigations by some media outlets, we deemed it necessary to initiate a review of Bobby's record," McKinley explained.
He mentioned that the investigation revealed insufficient evidence regarding Bobby's age.
McKinley elaborated that all evidence provided regarding Bobby's age relied on microchip data from a Portuguese government database. However, the investigation uncovered that Bobby's microchip was implanted in 2022, at a time when Portugal did not mandate age verification for dogs born before 2008.
"Since the supplementary veterinary report, serving as evidence of Bobby's age, also references the microchip data, we lack definitive evidence to confirm Bobby's date of birth conclusively," McKinley added. "In the absence of conclusive evidence currently available to us, we are unable to maintain Bobby's status as a record holder while upholding the rigorous standards we have set for ourselves."
He confirmed that Bobby's owner, Leonel Costa, has been notified of the decision, and GWR is open to evaluating any additional evidence if provided.
McKinley mentioned that the organization has yet to identify a new title holder.
