Lottery Club Turns Spare Change into $1 Million Prize
A Michigan lottery club astonishingly won a $1 million Mega Millions prize by funding their lottery play with spare change from can recycling, Michigan Lottery reported. Known as the Winfield lottery club from Fenton, this three-member group had been pooling their resources for more than 30 years.
The pivotal draw occurred on May 17, where they matched the five white balls: 08-17-40-60-70. Their winning ticket was bought at the Kroger store, located at 700 North State Road in Davison.
"After the drawing, I remembered I hadn't checked our Mega Millions ticket yet, so I pulled up the winning numbers and looked the ticket over. When all the numbers matched except the Mega Ball, I thought: 'I'm not seeing this right,'" recounted one group member who preferred to stay anonymous. She added, "I had my husband look the ticket over and once he confirmed what I was seeing, I called the other club member to share the big news. We both were so nervous we felt like we were going to be sick!"
Kenneth Baran, representing the club, said, "It still hasn't fully sunk in for the club members yet. Winning is a huge blessing." The club plans to invest their sizeable prize.
Notably, Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday evening, with tickets sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each play costs $2, with an optional Megaplier costing an additional $1, which can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to five times.
