A 106-year-old resident of South Carolina, USA, received an honorary high school diploma.
SSPDaily tells about it.
Fred Allen Smalls, also known as "Grandpa," was awarded at a ceremony at Georgetown High School attended by more than 100 people.
Smalls was born on February 5, 1918, in the Plantersville neighborhood of Georgetown. After eighth grade, he dropped out of school to move to Washington, D.C., to help support his family. He never finished his education.
His granddaughter, Birdella Kinney, helped him finish the job.
Kinney documented Smalls' favorite activities, including watching sports and spending time with the family dog, Bella, on TikTok. These videos led to her grandfather being featured in an NBC News article about black long-livers who became social media celebrities.
The graduation ceremony was attended by District Superintendent Keith Price and Georgetown Mayor Carol Jareau.
