Fishermen caught a rare three-meter-long sea creature nicknamed the "harbinger of doom".
SSPDaily tells about it.
The paddlefish has no scales or mucus, its length can reach 17 meters and its weight is 199 kg. The bizarre-looking creature lives in the depths of the world's oceans and is a rare sight for humans.
But it is believed that this is the second appearance of a paddlefish on the Andaman coast of Thailand this year, and according to legends, it is not very good news.
In Japanese mythology, the fish is considered a harbinger of impending doom or danger. It is believed that seeing one is a sign of a natural disaster.
Six deep-sea creatures were spotted in 2017, just days before a deadly earthquake struck the Philippines, killing six people and injuring 120 others.
Thus, the creature was dubbed the "doomsday fish."
So when fishermen in the Andaman Sea recently pulled a paddlefish aboard, people began to worry. One resident of the area said: "If you see a paddlefish on the outskirts of Satun, it could indicate a potential earthquake hazard along the Andaman coast. It could also be a tsunami."
The corpse, which was in good condition except for a small wound on its head, will now be examined along with another paddlefish found last month. Once the study is completed, both will be exhibited in a local museum.
However, while locals are worried about the possibility of death, Jessada Denduangboripant, a biology professor at Chulalongkorn University, says their appearance near the water's surface is likely due to disease or a change in the current.
He said: "The discovery of this paddlefish does not imply an earthquake or tsunami, it is just a belief. In fact, they mostly appear because they are sick or close to death."
