A group photo in the dark can be ruined because everyone's eyes will be red due to the flash. But there is a very specific explanation for this. SSPDaily tells about it.
The reason for red pupils was revealed in a TikTok video by Nicholas Grant, who posted a clip on his account explaining the interesting scientific reason for this phenomenon.
He said: "You've probably heard that red-eye in photos is caused by the flash bouncing back into the camera, but it turns out that it's actually a little more interesting than that. If you're in a dark room, your pupil opens very wide, letting in light, and that's exactly the situation where you should use the flash. Normally, if your eye sees a bright light, it closes. But the flash is too fast for the pupil to react. The dilated pupil causes red eyes. That's why some cameras use a dual flash – one to close the pupil and another to take the picture."
Nicholas also answered the most important question: why pupils are red. The red hue is caused by the blood vessels in the eyes. He added: "It turns out that the color you see is a flash illuminating the inside of your eyes, and it gets the red appearance because of the blood vessels in your eyes."

However, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, seeing red when you take a picture with a flash is actually a good thing because it means your eyes are healthy.
"The red reflex occurs when the camera's flash illuminates the blood-rich retina. If your eyes are looking directly into the camera lens and the color of the reflex in both eyes is red, it's usually a good sign that the retina in both eyes is free and healthy."
However, even knowing that this is a good sign, some commenters on the video were still horrified:
- So this is literally us seeing the inside of our eyes?
- It's a little creepy, I'm not lying.
- It's freaking scary!
